Data Spotlight: Teen Birth Rates Reflect Economic and Social Disparities.

For teen births, race/ethnicity, poverty, and place all make a difference.

  • Among Latinas, teen births declined significantly from 2001 to 2010, echoing a trend that occurred 10 years earlier in other racial/ethnic groups.
  • The teen birth rate for Latinas was 6 times the rate for Asians/Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders.
  • Teens in high-poverty neighborhoods were over 6 times more likely to give birth than those in low-poverty neighborhoods.
  • King County’s highest teen birth rates were clustered in South Region.
  • Nationally and internationally, variation in income inequality is related to differences in teen birth rates (data not shown).
