Most of King County’s low-income students attend school in the South Region.
Students in families where income is up to 185% of federal poverty guidelines qualify for free or reduced-price school meals and are considered “low-income”. In the 2014-15 school year:
- More than 60% of King County's low-income students were enrolled in 6 South Region school districts - Tukwila, Highline, Federal Way, Auburn, Renton, and Kent. Seattle accounted for another 20%.
- More than half of students in the Tukwila, Skykomish, Highline, Federal Way, Auburn, Renton, and Kent school districts qualified for free and reduced-price meals.
- The numbers (and percentages) of low-income children in the Seattle and Bellevue districts continue to decline slowly. Both cities are increasingly unaffordable for families with children.
